One has to wonder what kind of game Thabo Bester is playing when he asks the court to consider imposing the death penalty on him and releasing his co-defendants.

The convicted murderer and Facebook rapist’s drama continues in the Free State Supreme Court, where he passionately called for the death penalty on Wednesday, June 5.

Bester entered the dock, smartly dressed, and represented himself after his last legal representatives withdrew from the trial, allegedly because of unpaid legal fees.

The murderer and rapist with an unwavering penchant for high-end designer clothes told Judge Cagney Musi, according to The Citizen, that he “would not want to go ahead” with being escorted to his court date in 80 cars and waking up at 2 a.m. with chains around his ankles and frozen feet.

Bester was due to appear in court again on Wednesday along with his ex-girlfriend and alleged accomplice Dr Nandipha Magudumana and seven co-accused – including the father of the disgraced former doctor, Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni – to face charges related to the notorious conman’s escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022.

As the camera pans to show an emotional Magadumana holding a Bible, Bester told the court it hurt him to see his co-defendant in court for something “they knew nothing about.”

“Your Honor, I say this as a broken man and I say this from the bottom of my heart. It tears me apart to see these people in this court, knowing that they are suffering for something they know nothing about.”

Citing a law that has since been repealed, he called for the death penalty in a petition that was to be signed by the public.

“I will agree immediately and we can put this matter to rest. I came here with 80 cars and woke up at 2 a.m. I had chains on my feet. My feet are ice cold. I can’t feel my toes right now. I don’t want to proceed like that, Your Honor.

“If that means this court can accept the petition and the public can sign it, then we can put this all to rest. I am at peace. I know what I did and what I did not do,” Bester told the court.

Bester is known as the “Facebook Rapist” for luring women into his evil clutches after making them big promises on social media. He faked his death to avoid a life sentence for murder and rape at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in the Free State. And that is the least.

According to him, “none of this” would have happened if there had been “no backhand from the political control bodies.”

At one point he also complained that he had been advised not to wear his luxury brand clothing in the courtroom because it would make too much of a public impression. So he left his cell wearing a camel-colored, mid-length Melton jacket, a crisp white shirt and a black crew-neck sweater.

He subsequently complained about the hardships imposed on him by the State at the Kgosi Mampuru II Central Maximum Correctional Facility in Salvokop, Pretoria.

An impassioned Bester criticised the prison service and claimed that his phone calls with his legal team were being recorded. He expressed concern about his mental state, citing that he had had no contact with anyone outside his cell other than the guard for the past 15 months. He also condemned the media for their portrayal of him and the articles written about him.

This man clearly has no understanding or regard for the consequences. Someone else commented that he was just “Thabo Bestering the Court”.

Thabo was also ridiculed for complaining about the treatment he received, especially because he was so smart. Saffas have no compassion, so Thabo should be really careful what he wishes for.

“Zirre dramatic… yes, give it to him. Where do we sign… Who will start the petition? For his victims.” (@Dellie108)

“He is a coward because he wants the death penalty. Let him spend his time in prison until he dies. Does he want the easy way out?” (@KG_Mulelwa)

“We don’t want him dead. We want him to live and suffer for what he did. Families have lost loved ones while he and his co-defendants have largely survived.” (@Spar)

The case was adjourned to July 24 and Bester was given seven days to appoint new counsel.
