Investigators say a student killed by police outside a school in Wisconsin had a shotgun

Authorities say a student killed by police outside a Wisconsin school pointed a shotgun at officers and refused to drop the weapon

The state Justice Department released few other details three days after the shooting at Mount Horeb Middle School in Mount Horeb, 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Madison, the Wisconsin capital.

The student, whose name and age have not yet been officially released, did not come to school. No one else was physically injured, but the school was on lockdown for hours during Wednesday’s incident.

Police were called around 11 a.m. that day after a caller said someone was heading toward the school with a backpack and a long gun.

“Officers asked the individual to drop the weapon, but the individual did not comply,” the Justice Department said Saturday. “The person pointed the gun at the officers, after which the police fired their firearms and struck the person. Life-saving measures were taken, but the person died at the scene.”

The weapon was described as a .177 caliber Ruger pellet rifle. The state said police at the scene were wearing body cameras.

Mount Horeb District schools did not hold classes on Thursday and Friday.
