5 dead after traffic accident in Beaufort County

BEAUFORT COUNTY, Sc. (WTOC) – Five people were killed in a car crash in Beaufort County Wednesday evening.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on the Sea Island Parkway near the intersection with Polowana Road, east of Beaufort.

A 2009 BMW sedan collided head-on with a 2009 Honda Accord while attempting to overtake a 2004 Toyota Tundra on Sea Island Parkway. The BMW sedan veered off the right side of the road, overturned, and caught fire.

The Toyota Tundra tried to avoid the accident and also veered off the right side of the road. The Toyota Tundra then crashed into the BMW sedan.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of the Honda Accord died at the scene. The driver and three passengers of the BMW sedan died as a result of the crash.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
