1 dead and 2 injured in serious crash on I-5 near Thornton, officials say

ANNE DENYER IS NOW JOINING LIVE FROM THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT. LEANNE HAS BEEN TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO WITNESSED THE ACCIDENT. SO, LEANNE, WHAT HAVE YOU TOLD THEM ABOUT WHAT YOU WATCHED AND SAW? WELL, WE SAW AT LEAST A DOZEN GOOD SAMARITANS GET OUT OF THEIR VEHICLES AND LINE UP TO THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT TO HELP THE PEOPLE IN THE VEHICLE. SEVERAL PEOPLE WE TALKED TO AFTERWARDS WERE INCREDIBLY SHOCKED. SOME OF THEM, I THINK, ARE JUST A LITTLE IN SHOCK. IT APPEARS THAT THREE VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED IN THIS ACCIDENT. THIS IS THE TAIL WE BELIEVE WAS INVOLVED. YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH DEBRIS IS UNDER IT. WE WILL NOT SHOW YOU THE ACCIDENT SCENE LIVE. IT’S RIGHT NOW 30 TO 50 FEET IN FRONT OF ME. BECAUSE OF THE SENSITIVENESS OF THE ACCIDENT SCENE, WE WILL NOT SHOW YOU THAT LIVE. WE HAVE SOME VIDEO FROM THE IMMEDIATE MINUTES AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I MENTIONED WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO AN INTERVIEW SOUTH ON 5 AT 5 AM WHEN WE CAME UP WITH THIS AND AGAIN, PEOPLE ARE JUMPING OUT OF THEIR VEHICLES AND WALKING AROUND TO HELP THESE TWO OR, SORRY, THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THIS ACCIDENT. ONE OF THE FIRST AID PEOPLE HERE ON THE SITE TOLD US THAT TWO OF THEM ACTUALLY HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. AND UNFORTUNATELY, ONE PERSON DIED IMMEDIATELY AFTER ALL OF THIS. AS YOU MENTIONED, WE HAVE TALKED TO SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO STOPPED TO HELP. ONE OF THEM HAPPENED TO BE DRIVING NORTH AND WAS AN OFF-DUTY FIREMAN. HE SAID HE SAW ONE OF THE TRUCKS ON FIRE AND STOPPED AND JUMPED OUT OF HIS VEHICLE. HE TOLD US. HE TOLD US WHAT HE SAW COMING NORTH ON I-5. AND I SAW A CLOUD OF SMOKE. I SAW THE VEHICLE PRETTY MUCH ON FIRE AND I SAW PEOPLE TRYING TO USE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. SO I STOPPED AND CAME OVER TO SEE IF ANYONE WAS IN THE VEHICLE. IT WAS AN INMATE AND THEN I JUST TOOK THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND KEEP THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL UNTIL THE CHARGER GOT HERE AND THEN I HELPED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT CUT THE PATIENT OUT. WE TRIED TO PULL HER OUT THROUGH THE WINDOW, THE DOORS ARE JAMMED. NO ONE HAD TOOLS OR ANYTHING. WHEN THEY GOT HERE WITH THEIR TOOLS I JUST TOOK IT FROM THEM AND HELPED THEM WHILE THEY PULLED THE HOSE AND EVERYTHING OUT. BACK OUT HERE LIVE YOU CAN SEE A TOW TRUCK JUST GOT HERE. IT SEEMS LIKE THEY’RE PREPARING TO TOW THIS BIG TRUCK OUT OF THE AREA. AS I MENTIONED, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, FACING THE OTHER DIRECTION, IS THE WRECKAGE. WE CAN SEE THE TWO SEVERELY, SEVERELY DAMAGED VEHICLES RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. A CHP IS HERE WORKING ON THEIR INVESTIGATION, AND WE WILL STAY HERE AND CONTINUE TO COLLECT INFORMATION, TRY TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. WE HAVE HEARD FROM A FEW WITNESSES THAT IT APPEARS THAT ONE OF THE VEHICLES WAS GOING NORTH AND ACTUALLY CHANGING INTO THE SOUTHBOUND LANES, BUT WE’RE GOING TO WORK TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT’S GOING ON. WE’RE WORKING BASED ON OFFICIAL STATEMENTS FROM OFFICIALS. AGAIN, SO MUCH, SO MUCH, SO HAPPENING IN REAL TIME RIGHT NOW. SO WE’LL SEND IT BACK TO YOU. YES.
