BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Governor Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced the completion of the $19 million Olympic Avenue Apartments for low-income households.

Apartments are affordable to those earning 60% or less of the area median income.

Located in the former Public School 78 in East Buffalo, the once-vacant building now contains 46 apartments. Forty-three apartments have one bedroom and three have two bedrooms. In total, eight units are specifically intended for people with disabilities who will have access to on-site support services.

The development will provide free internet as well as energy-efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning. The apartments also feature new sidewalks, lighting, a playground and a community garden.

“This project exemplifies New York’s creativity in transforming underutilized properties into much-needed housing,” Hochul said in a statement. “Our continued investments in East Buffalo improve affordability, strengthen our communities and increase housing opportunities for all.
