Police investigate fatal shooting after gunfire in Nashville

  • According to Nashville police, a verbal exchange near Lewis Street and Winfrey Street resulted in gunfire and one fatality.

Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Lewis and Winfrey streets in Nashville, according to a police news release.

Two people were involved in a shootout. Police have not yet determined the identity of the man who was killed.

Investigators believe the victim was walking down Lewis Street with a gun in his hand when a verbal argument broke out with another person.

Shots were fired between the victim and another, also unknown person.

The victim was struck and fled down Lewis Street before collapsing, police said. The victim threw the weapon over a fence onto Metro Water Department property. The weapon was recovered.

The investigation is ongoing.
