Victim of attack on the canals of Venice is reportedly being taken off life support

According to media reports and an online fundraising site, a victim of the attacks in the canals of Venice last month was taken off life support on Friday evening.

Investigators said the woman was in a coma for nearly two months after the April 6 attack, in which she was severely beaten and sexually assaulted. She was surrounded by family and friends and her organs were donated, according to a report by KTLA-TV and a GoFundMe page set up for the woman’s memorial.

The Times generally does not name victims of sexual assault.

Friends of the 53-year-old victim told KTLA that she had just signed a lease on an apartment in Venice and was planning to move there from Massachusetts, calling it her lifelong dream. The mother of two had planned to meet friends for brunch to tell them the news, but never got the chance because she had been attacked the night before, the fundraising page states.

The attack was one of two that occurred less than a mile apart in Venice between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. that night. A second woman who was brutally beaten survived.

She told the Times last month that she had been walking after work to meet her daily goal of 10,000 steps when she was hit from behind. She spoke from a hospital where she was recovering from at least eight broken jaws, a large cut on the back of her head and bruises on her face and neck.

Last month, prosecutors charged 29-year-old Anthony Francisco Jones with multiple counts related to both attacks, including rape, torture and attempted murder. He remains in jail without bail, according to online prisoner records.
