A seven-year-old girl died on Thursday evening when she was hit by a truck while riding her scooter. Police described the accident as a “very tragic accident.”

Mesa authorities initially said the girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident near Broadway and Horne. However, a video showed that the driver struck the 7-year-old as he turned into the driveway of a four-family home and did not leave the scene of the accident.

The accident occurred on May 23 at approximately 6:15 p.m. when the driver of a large F-150 truck with off-road tires was traveling on Highway 3.rd Avenue “around sunset when he turned right into the driveway of an apartment building (four-family dwelling),” according to a Mesa police news release on Friday.

“The vehicle drove to the back of the building and parked. As the driver walked to the front of the building, he noticed a little girl with injuries and her scooter lying in the driveway. The driver immediately called 911, not knowing what had happened to her.

“It is believed to have been a very tragic accident and no charges have been filed against the driver,” the press release said.
