Fatal truck accident in Wilkinson County

The accident occurred around 3:20 p.m. One truck was traveling north and the other truck was traveling west.

WILKINSON COUNTY, Ga. – A truck accident occurred on State Route 441 in Wilkinson County. So far we know that it was a fatal accident.

One person died when two trucks collided at the intersection of State Route 112 and US Highway 441.

According to Deputy Coroner Dusty Thomas, it happened around 3:20 p.m. and was a T-bone accident.

One truck was heading north and the other was heading west.

There is a stop sign along State Route 112, but the Georgia State Patrol says the westbound truck did not stop and struck the other truck. Both trucks caught fire.

“This is a very dangerous intersection,” Thomas said. “We’ve had several accidents in the last 20 years I’ve worked here. If you’re out here, buckle up and drive safely.”

The driver of the truck that was hit was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 p.m

After his truck caught fire, the driver was reportedly able to get out of the truck but was “wrapped in flames.”

According to the Georgia State Patrol, he collapsed on the road and died from his injuries.

According to state police, the driver who allegedly ran the stop sign was taken to a local hospital with a possible broken leg.

“This is just a dangerous intersection and they need to come out here and put some warning lights or maybe even a red light,” Thomas said. “I know it’s way out in the county, but with the amount of fatalities we’ve had at this intersection, I think they may need to look for a red light, at least some warning lights or a stop sign lit.”

The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the accident.
