Mother mauled to death and children injured by dogs in rural Georgia

A mother was mauled to death by a pack of dogs after she tried to save her children from the brutal attack in rural Georgia.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Courtney Williams, 35, was found dead in a yard near a bus stop behind Brooks County Middle School in Quitman, where the family had been waiting when the dogs struck.

“When officers arrived, they encountered several aggressive dogs on the property,” the GBI said.

Two children injured in the May 9 attack were hospitalized. Her mother’s body was found in the yard of a nearby residential building.

Williams’ sister-in-law Crystal Cox shared an update on Facebook along with graphic photos showing the children’s injuries. According to the family, the boy suffered multiple cuts from the dogs while protecting his little sister.

“Kayden got Sissy out of harm’s way by doing this, he saved her but took on the dogs himself,” Ms Cox wrote on Facebook.

According to the post, a third child, Nathan, ran to school for help during the attack, but then turned back because he thought he didn’t have time to help his other siblings.

The child managed to flag down a man Ms Cox described as an “angel” who helped rescue the children.

She said the children were shaken and processing the traumatic event.

Another post from Ms Cox earlier in the day announced the heartbreaking news of the attack.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have to say this,” she wrote. “My brother’s wife, Courtney Williams Cox, passed away yesterday. The neighbors’ dogs attacked her and the children. Her son Kayden didn’t get away quickly enough as he pushed his sister out of harm’s way. He was injured pretty badly (but he’s fine). They pinned him. (He) is in pain and is resting at my house.”

Just days before Mother’s Day, a neighbor told WALB she was saddened by the tragedy.

“I feel for the family and the children because now they have to celebrate Mother’s Day without their mother,” the neighbor said.
