The boil water warning remains in effect following the major water pipe burst in Jefferson County

Birmingham Water Works repaired a major water main break Friday evening that affected more than 10,000 people in northwest Jefferson County. The rupture occurred at the western filter plant in Birmingham’s Pratt City neighborhood. It caused outages and affected water pressure in Adamsville, Brookside, Forestdale and Fultondale, Graysville, Minor and West Jefferson, according to BWW. The system will be flushed overnight and into Saturday morning. A boil water warning will last at least until Monday, according to BWW. The list of areas they said are affected includes in and around: Forestdale, Sandusky, Pratt City, Lewisburg, Coalburg, Mineral Springs, Pinkney City, Hayes Highland, Greenleas Heights, Smithfield Estates, Zion Heights, Westwood , Union Grove, Hillview, Adamsville, Fultondale, USA Highway 78Cherry AvenueTomahawk DriveThe list also includes streets bordering these areas:Pratt HighwayDugan HighwayHibernian StreetCoalburg RoadHeflin AvenueWalker Chapel RoadBrookside Coalburg RoadDuring the boil water warning, the agency is asking customers to have water at least bring to a boil for three minutes and allow to cool. According to Birmingham City Schools, South Hampton K-8 School is closed due to the water issue. Buses took students to regular stops and families of those driving were asked to pick up their children as quickly as possible. Birmingham Water Works resolved a major water main outage Friday evening that affected more than 10,000 people in northwest Jefferson County.

The break occurred at the Westfilter plant in Birmingham’s Pratt City district.

It caused outages and affected water pressure in Adamsville, Brookside, Forestdale, Fultondale, Graysville, Minor and West Jefferson, according to BWW. The system will be flushed overnight and into Saturday morning.

According to BWW, the boil water warning will last at least until Monday.

The list of areas they said were affected includes in and around:

  • Mineral springs
  • Pinkney City
  • Hayes Highland
  • Greenleas Heights
  • Smithfield Estates,
  • Zion Heights

  • Fultondale
  • U.S. Highway 78
  • Cherry Alley
  • Tomahawk Drive

The list also includes streets bordering these areas:

  • Brookside Coalburg Rd

During the boil water warning, the agency is asking customers to bring the water to a boil for at least three minutes and allow it to cool before using, or to use bottled water instead.

The outage affected several schools in these areas.

According to Birmingham City Schools, South Hampton K-8 School was closed due to water issues. Buses took students to regular stops and families of those driving were asked to pick up their children as quickly as possible.
