Louisville-area firefighter dies in off-duty drowning accident at Barren River Lake | News from WDRB

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WDRB) — An Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS firefighter has died following a tragic accident.

On Monday, department spokesman Jordan Yuodis said Sergeant Christian Smith drowned while swimming in Barren River Lake in southern Kentucky, about 100 miles from Bowling Green.

Smith was 35 years old. He had been with the Anchorage Middletown Fire Department since 2014 and was assigned to Rescue Company 33.

Yuodis said it is important to stick together in these times.

“The coming days and weeks will be challenging, but it is crucial that we stand together as a department,” Yuodis said in a press release.

The Jefferson County Fire Department asked in a Facebook post that Smith’s “wife and children, family, friends and crew be kept in our hearts.”

At this time, no funeral arrangements have been made.
