Police: Driver hit sign, got out of car before being hit, killed in Rockville

Investigators in Montgomery County, Maryland, are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that killed a 43-year-old man on Wednesday.

Investigators in Montgomery County, Maryland, are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that killed a 43-year-old man on Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Earl William Smith of Clinton, according to a police news release Friday.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters and Montgomery County police officers responded to reports of a pedestrian struck on the west side of Norbeck Road between Georgia Avenue and Muncaster Mill Road.

Police said Smith was driving when he collided with a sign and his vehicle came to rest in the median. Smith then got out of his vehicle and was struck in the roadway by the driver of a black BMW. According to police, the driver of the BMW remained at the scene of the accident.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
