Good neighbors are worth their weight in gold, but if you believe the stories, they are just as hard to find.

Increasingly, we hear of neighbors willing to call the police or the city or both to resolve issues that probably didn’t seem like a big deal at first.

This guy and his neighbor go to court over a minor issue. But while he tries to keep things professional, his neighbor doesn’t.

Find out what happened when he beat them to the city’s complaint office.

A bit of backstory: I am the sole owner of a duplex. The other side of the duplex is rented by three men in their early 30s.

Earlier this year, there was an incident where one of my roommates ruined my basement carpet by leaving his sump pump hose lying around my house.

It was an honest mistake, but he is refusing to pay for the damages, so this will ultimately end up in court, for which I still need to file the paperwork.

As you can imagine, things are a bit tense between us at the moment.

Then he learned that the neighbor had a plan for revenge.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the story: Last weekend, one of my friends happened to run into one of my roommates who lives next door.

Neither of them knew that they knew me, but after a while they realized that they both knew me.

My neighbor then left and called me the “neighbor from hell” because I was planning to sue the other roommate to recover my basement costs.

He said that if I went through with the lawsuit, the property owner they were renting from would sue me back, claiming that the deck on my house was not up to code.

So he made one himself.

As far as I know, you can’t sue anyone for this because it doesn’t cause you any financial loss and it’s not the building inspectorate.

Just in case something does happen, I checked the title documents and made sure all permits and inspections for my deck were properly done, so I’m covered…

But that got me thinking… Last summer, my neighbors built their patio. So I checked with the city and found out that no permits had been filed for it.

Guess who is getting a visit from the city building inspector this week?

Ultimately, the building may have to be demolished completely, but it is more likely that only a fine will be imposed.

On the other hand, they could have simply stepped in.

But I doubt they’ll be having a barbecue together anytime soon.
