2 skiers dead, 1 rescued after avalanche tumbles down popular mountain peak in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – According to FOX 13 Salt Lake City, searches for two missing skiers have ended after an avalanche was reported along Utah’s Lone Peak Summit Thursday morning.

United Fire officials told FOX 13 that although the avalanche occurred in a remote location, the avalanche occurred in the area of ​​Little Cottonwood Canyon, a popular spot for skiers and snow recreation.

FOX 13 reports that three skiers were hit by the avalanche, but one skier was able to free himself from the avalanche and call 911. He has since been rescued, but the bodies of two others were reportedly found on Thursday.

The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has not identified the avalanche victims but said one was from out of state.

FOX 13 reports the area has experienced heavy, late-season snowfall in recent days, which may have triggered the event.
