The former president had just begun to address the crowd when five gunshots were heard. He fell to the ground, surrounded by Secret Service agents. He was carried off the stage, raising his fist toward the crowd. Blood was visible on his right ear.

Fox News reported that one of the rally participants died and two others were seriously injured.

The suspected shooter was on an adjacent roof and was shot.

The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect involved in the attack.

“The investigation is ongoing and not complete. Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to submit photos or videos online at FBI.gov/butler or call 1-800-CALL-FBI,” the statement continued.

Former President Trump posted on Truth Social:

“I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all law enforcement agencies for their quick response to the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most of all, I want to express my condolences to the family of the person killed at the rally and the family of another person who was seriously injured. It is unbelievable that something like this can happen in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was hit by a bullet that pierced the top of my right ear. I knew immediately something was wrong because I heard a whooshing sound, gunshots and immediately felt the bullet pierce the skin. There was severe bleeding, so I realized what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
