REPORT: Houston Texans offensive lineman is fully healthy and ready to compete for starting spot ahead of 2024 season

The Houston Texans had a turbulent situation at left guard last season. Their projected starter, Kenyon Green, missed the entire 2023 season with a shoulder injury in their final preseason game. That’s not all. The Texans had four starters at left guard.

Josh Jones started in Week 1, but an injury to Laremy Tunsil forced him to take over at LT for Weeks 2 and 3. However, Jones suffered a hand injury, missed Weeks 4 and 5, and was removed from the starting rotation. Kendrick Green, who took over in Week 2, started Weeks 2-4 but suffered a knee injury and missed the remainder of the season.

Tytus Howard, who missed the first four games with a hand injury, replaced Green, starting Weeks 5–12, and suffered a season-ending knee injury. Juice Scruggs, who missed the first ten games with a hamstring injury, replaced the injured Howard and started Weeks 13–18 and both playoff games.

One of their starters, injured in the knee, feels better.

Kendrick Green, who started Weeks 2-4, suffered a season-ending torn meniscus in his right knee that forced him to miss the remainder of the season. He underwent knee surgery in the fall. He has fully recovered from the injury and is feeling better.

“I feel good, I’m ready to go,” Green told KPRC 2 at teammate Steven Sims Jr.’s youth football camp. “I’m excited, man. I feel good. I’m in the best shape of my life, so I’m ready to go.”

Kendrick is in the final year of his rookie contract and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025. Heading into training camp, he is healthy and will compete for a starting spot.

With Juice Scruggs moving back to center and Tytus Howard moving back to right tackle, his natural position, the Texans have a starting spot open at left guard. Green is one of the few players in contention. He’s eager to compete.

“I think it’s going to be fun, I’m excited,” Green said. “I know a lot of other guys are excited. So, we’re going to go for it and see how it goes.”

He will be competing against a former first-round pick.

The Houston Texans’ 2022 first-round pick will also compete for the spot.

Kenyon Green will also be competing for the starting spot. Green, a former first-round pick in 2022, is entering his third year in the league. After struggling in his rookie season, he suffered a torn labrum in their final preseason game and missed the 2023 season. He has also fully recovered from the injury.

Kenyon is entering a crucial 2024 season, as the Texans must decide in May on his fifth-year option for the 2026 season. Given the way he’s played so far, they’ll likely decline his option, but if he plays well, they could change their minds.

So far, Kenyon has gotten first-team reps in offseason workouts. However, that could change once training camp begins and they put on the pads.
