Suicide attacks in Borno: Police confirm that attackers killed and injured a policeman

Police in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, confirmed two suicide attacks in Gwoza township that killed nine Pipo.

A state ASP official, Nahum Daso, told BBC News Pidgin that the first attack occurred when a female suicide bomber carrying a child detonated a bomb at the popular Mararaba T-junction in Gwoza.

It happened at about 3pm and most of the Pipos who experienced the attack were coming from wedding ceremonies.

“So on Saturday, the wedding party and the Pipo Bin come back from different places. It is very busy, especially at the intersection, although the majority of the Pipo are coming back for the day from the wedding party and everything.

“He caught a particular woman with a baby behind her, she had an explosive device in her possession and detonated the bomb. The woman, her baby and five other people died while less than fifteen were injured.”

ASP Daso says the second attack took place when they were praying for the burial of Pipo, who died in the first attack.

According to the police official, a female suicide bomber detonated a bomb less than two hours after the first attack, killing one person, including herself, and injuring Odas.

No group claims responsibility for these attacks.

This was the third time in the last four months that attackers in Borno State carried out suicide attacks and bombings against Pipo.

At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured when a commercial vehicle carried out a bomb attack on April 17, 2024. They were suspected members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

On March 18, two police officers were arrested after a suspected suicide bomber threw a bomb with the explosive device embedded in his body at a memorial site near a mosque in Biu Local Government Area of ​​Borno State.

Borno police said the incident occurred around 8 p.m. when Muslim worshippers were performing their night prayers.

There remains great insecurity in North-East Nigeria as criminal gangs continue to attack innocent gangs, negatively affecting the livelihoods of the residents of this region.

Despite the efforts of the Nigerian military, it is still difficult to fully secure the area as the insurgents continue to use guerrilla tactics and launch surprise attacks.
