Chinese woman who tried to prevent an attack that injured Japanese has died

A Chinese woman died in serious condition on Monday while trying to prevent a knife attack that injured a Japanese woman and her child, according to local security authorities in Suzhou, eastern China’s Jiangsu province.

The woman, Hu Youping, 54, died on Wednesday, according to the country’s official Xinhua news agency.

Hu, a Japanese school bus attendant, was stabbed when she tried to stop a man armed with a knife from boarding the bus, which was packed with many children at the time.

The government of Suzhou has decided to recognize her as a righteous and brave person.

On Friday, the flag of the Japanese embassy in China flew at half-mast.

“We deeply respect her courageous act and express our sincere condolences,” said Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi.
