One year later, no arrests in connection with the death of two women during a chase

A year has passed, and a Milwaukee father is no closer to finding out who killed his daughter and another young woman during a 2023 police chase that ended in a crash. The crash scene on June 28, 2023, was devastating, as a small SUV slammed head-on into a brick building on the corner of 23rd and Hopkins. “The impact was horrific. It was like a bomb went off. It made a bang, it’s indescribable. The noise, the force,” Ricky Thomas told 12 News the day of the accident. A year later, the building now stands vacant. The force of the impact left the building so structurally damaged that it is no longer inhabitable until repairs are completed. Passengers Kyra Johnson, 28, and Haley Fehrenbach, 20, were killed. But the driver ran away and was never found. “We all want closure on this, and where is the perpetrator?” Fehrenbach’s father asked Friday. “He ran away and is as free as you and I are walking around here now. Nothing ever happened to him.” The father returned to the crime scene for the first time in nearly a year. He does not want his name used because the man behind the wheel is still at large. Fehrenbach’s father said she deserved better. “She was a wonderful girl. She had a big heart. It’s just very tough,” he said. He is speaking out now because he is increasingly frustrated with the response of Milwaukee police. He said they have done nothing to keep him or Johnson’s family updated on progress. “The only contact I had with police initially was to identify my daughter’s body,” he said. “After that, it was always me who contacted them.” In response to inquiries from 12 News, Milwaukee police said they had identified a suspect but no one had been arrested or charged. “They’re just being stalled and I feel like this case is at the bottom of the pile and they just keep putting other cases on top of it and saying, ‘Eh, we’ll get to it eventually,’ and it’s just frustrating.”
