Mumbai sub-inspector charged with rape and molestation

A case has been filed against a 32-year-old police inspector in Navi Mumbai for allegedly raping and harassing a married policewoman, also a member of the Mumbai Police. The incidents allegedly took place between 2020 and July 2022, an official statement released on Sunday said.

The accused allegedly befriended the 26-year-old victim and promised to marry her. Taking advantage of this promise, he allegedly raped her multiple times in a flat in Sanpada. Moreover, the officer said the accused took Rs 1.9 million from the victim under various pretexts, of which he returned only Rs 1.461 million. Other allegations include stalking and threatening the victim, asking her to leave her husband with deadly consequences if she did not comply.

Initially, a complaint was lodged at Pant Nagar police station in Mumbai, which led to the registration of a ‘zero’ FIR under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These include sections 376 for rape, 376(2)(n) for repeated rape, 354(a) for sexual harassment, 354(d) for stalking, 506(2) for criminal intimidation and 420 for cheating. The case has now been handed over to the Sanpada police for further investigation.

The Zero FIR can be filed at any police station, irrespective of the location of the incident, and will be forwarded to the concerned department for investigation.
