Thompson teen arrested in hit-and-run of Coventry, Rhode Island police officer: PD

CONNECTICUT, USA – A Thompson man was arrested in Connecticut on Wednesday after he crashed a vehicle into a Coventry, Rhode Island, police officer and fled the scene, police said.

Coventry, Rhode Island, police said they, along with officers from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, went to the Coventry Bike Path west of Lewis Farm Road at 9 p.m. Tuesday to break up a group of people.

As officers approached the group, a vehicle sped away from the scene and struck one of the Coventry, Rhode Island, police said. After the collision, the vehicle continued toward Connecticut without stopping.

The officer was taken to Kent Hospital for treatment and his condition is currently unknown, according to police.

Police said the suspect, Ryland Roy, 19, of Thompson, was identified following interviews with witnesses at the scene and further action by investigators.

Roy was arrested by Connecticut State Police on Wednesday as a “fugitive from justice” and is currently awaiting extradition in Connecticut to face trial in Rhode Island on charges of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police said further charges may be brought as the investigation progresses.
