Edo Assembly considers suspension of three members

The Edo State House of Representatives has set up a committee to investigate the suspension of three lawmakers on May 6, 2024.

The punch reports that the Assembly suspended MPs on May 6 over alleged conspiracy to remove Speaker Blessing Agbebaku and other key officials from office.

The Speaker announced the suspension at the resumption of the plenary session in Benin, as the number of MPs was reduced to 21 due to this development.

However, at a briefing for journalists on the activities of the assembly over the past year on Wednesday, Agbebaku said a committee had been set up to look into the suspension of the assembly, adding that its report would outline the way forward.

He said the Assembly had passed 16 bills and over 44 resolutions in a year, adding that the bills had political, social and economic impacts on the state.

He listed the bills which included the one introducing the Edo State Corps Governance Law 2024, a bill declaring Beautiful Edo, Glorious Edo the official anthem of the state and a bill introducing the Edo State Oil Palm Scheme, among others.

Agbebaku explained that a total of 44 resolutions had been adopted during the reporting period and that several petitions were pending at various committee levels.

“The year under review has brought some challenges for the Eighth Assembly, but thanks to the bonds of friendship, fellowship, understanding and unity, the House is standing strong.

“I would like to thank my brave, learned, intelligent, dynamic, result-oriented and kind colleagues of the 8th Assembly for their support, understanding and cooperation over the last 12 months.

“We owe our deep gratitude to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his overwhelming support for this gathering. His benevolence and defence of democracy in the state are worthy of our eternal admiration,” he said.
