India News | Jharkhand asks central government to stay proposed construction of DVC project at tribal religious site


Ranchi, June 19 (PTI) – The Jharkhand government on Wednesday decided to write to the central government to suspend the proposed construction of DVC’s 1,500 MW pumped storage project at Luguburu Pahad in Bokaro district, an official said.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Champai Soren, she said.

“The place is revered as a religious site by the Santhali tribe and the Sarna Dharma Mahasammelan is organised here every year. The Cabinet has decided to request the Government of India to suspend the planned construction work of the project,” said Cabinet Secretary Vandana Dadel.

No fewer than 33 proposals were approved at the cabinet meeting.

Among the most important decisions was the decision of the Personnel Ministry to conduct the proposed nationwide caste survey. However, the timetable for the survey has not yet been finalised.

The cabinet also approved a proposal for a one-off compensation for vehicles that do not pay their road tax, Dadel said.

There are around 400,000 such vehicles in the state and the total amount owed is Rs 2.2 billion including road tax and penalty, she said.

According to the proposal approved by the Cabinet, the vehicles could be regularized by paying the entire tax due and 50 percent of the penalty.
