5 dead and 25 injured in collision of Kanchanjungha Express with freight train in Bengal, rescue operation underway

Five people were killed and at least 25 injured when the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train near New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal on Monday morning, derailing two coaches of the train.

“Five people, including the driver of the Kanchenjunga Express, died on the spot while 25 were injured,” said Abhishek Roy, deputy SP Kurseong. He said police were trying to rescue those stuck.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the incident on X and said rescue and relief operations were underway. “I am shocked to learn of a tragic train accident in Phansidewa area of ​​Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express is reported to have been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulance and disaster management teams have been sent to the accident site for rescue, recovery and medical care. Operations on war footing,” Banerjee said.
