BEDFORD, NH – One person was killed in a fiery accident at a toll booth in New Hampshire Thursday afternoon.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, a Mercedes SL 500 was traveling southbound and approaching the Bedford Toll Plaza on the Everett Turnpike at around 3:15 p.m. when it crashed and caught fire after hitting a concrete barrier.

Witnesses pulled the driver, Scott Defreitas, 52, of Nashua, NH, from the car and attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Because of the accident, four lanes of the toll booth were closed for about three hours.

“Drivers should expect delays and avoid the area if possible,” state police wrote.

State police said all four lanes were reopened shortly after 6 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has additional information that may assist in the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Gazlay at [email protected].
