3 injured and suspect shot at Peachtree Center

Three people and a 34-year-old suspected shooter were shot dead Tuesday at an Atlanta food court, city officials said.

An off-duty Atlanta police officer shot the suspect, who was still armed at the time, after gunfire erupted at the Peachtree Center in downtown Atlanta, the police chief said. police Darin Schierbaum during a press conference after the shooting. The suspect first opened fire due to a struggle, he said.

Schierbaum said the suspect, a convicted felon with 11 prior arrests, shot someone after having “a brief altercation” with them in the Peachtree Center food court. The suspect then shot two other people who were in the food court, he added.

The injured included a 47-year-old man, a 69-year-old woman and a 70-year-old woman, all of whom were transported to area hospitals with the shooter, city officials said.

“I’m just grateful for the very quick response of the Atlanta Police Department, as well as the Atlanta Fire Rescue, who were able to get out there to help the injured,” the Atlanta mayor said. , Andre Dickens, during the press conference.

The building was closed Tuesday afternoon.

Dickens initially shared an X post at 2:48 p.m. ET Tuesday afternoon, saying four people had been shot in the Peachtree Center food court, which had been locked down.

Dickens, in a later X-article, and the Atlanta Police Department said one of the four people shot was believed to be a suspected shooter.
