Candlelight Vigil to Be Held for Venice Canal Attack Victim

Candles Will Be Provided for All to Participate in the Tribute

By Zach Armstrong

A candlelight vigil for Sarah Alden, the woman who lost her life several weeks after being attacked near the Venice Canals, is set to be held on June 13 at 7:30 pm by the walk bridge on Sherman Canal.

According to a GoFundMe post, Alden felt excitement around the time of the attack, because she had just signed a one-year lease in what the post described as “her favorite part of the United States”: Venice Beach. On April 6, Alden planned on meeting friends the next morning to announce her eminent LA move. That meeting never happened. On that night, at around 10:30 pm, she was viciously attacked along the canals. She sustained multiple brain injuries which resulted in a coma, the post states.

On Monday, May 20, in the late afternoon, Alden was declared brain dead.

“She was a lover of sunrises on the east coast and sunsets on the west coast.” stated the GFM post. “Sarah homeschooled her two sons, adored her animals, and was blessed with a refined eye for vintage jewelry which she sold on roseark.com. At 53 years old, Sarah was looking to start a new chapter in her journey; to walk a new road. Instead, her life was violently taken from her.”

Following the tragic death, Alden’s sons will donate her organs, according to the post. “They hope the love of their mother can live on through the gift of life to others. Her final chapter will help others live on and continue on their road. Tragically, her two sons – young men that need your support – now look to create a memorial service and future without their mother.” it states.

Of that GoFundMe’s goal of raising $150,000 (intended to fund the memorial, funeral and medical expenses of the recently deceased victim), it has raised just north of $52,000 at the time of this writing. Candles will be provided for everyone to participate in the tribute along the surrounding sidewalks of the canals.
