Navi Mumbai man arrested for raping woman after promising marriage

An official said on Tuesday that a 36-year-old man from Navi Mumbai was arrested by police for allegedly raping a woman after promising to marry her, news agency PTI reported.

The 29-year-old woman had filed a complaint against Mosin Hanif Muzawar at the Panvel police station, PTI reported.

She had an affair with the accused, who raped her after promising to marry her but later ended the relationship, she told police, PTI reported.

On Monday, a case was registered under sections 376 (rape) and 376(2)(n) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (raping the same woman multiple times) and a man from Navi Mumbai was arrested. The accused was kept in custody till late night. Further investigation is underway.

In another case, a man was arrested in Kalyan in Thane district for allegedly raping a teenage girl, a police official said on Sunday, PTI reported.

Another person is still being sought in this case and efforts are being made to nab him, an official at the MFC police station said.

The arrested accused has been identified as Anish Pandey while the absconding man is Abhishek Dere, the official said, according to PTI.

“The man took the girl to a remote place on June 6 after lying that her father had called her. The accused forced her to drink alcohol and raped her. The other person filmed the act. She was found in an intoxicated state near her house after which her relatives contacted the police,” he said, according to PTI.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old man was arrested in Palghar on Monday for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death, a police official said, according to PTI.

The accused, a name that refers to Sumit Tandel, was in a relationship with the victim for several years, an officer from Boisar police station told PTI.

“The two lived in Murbe village and worked in the same factory. They got into an argument during which he hit her with a stone. He was held by Satpati,” the official said.
