Data theft involving 2 former Kalamazoo employees is being criminally investigated

KALAMAZOO, MI – Kalamazoo city employees are being urged to monitor their bank accounts and credit scores after a data breach affected 250 current and former employees and their beneficiaries.

The data theft, involving two former city of Kalamazoo employees, was discovered by Kalamazoo police on March 28, said city communications manager Mike Smith. During the execution of a search warrant, documents from the city’s human resources department were found in a home.

The documents included the Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and passport and military ID numbers of 250 current and former employees.

City officials are not currently aware of any misuse of this information, Smith said, adding that both an internal and criminal investigation are ongoing.

The City of Kalamazoo has engaged the services of Norton LifeLock Inc. to provide free identity and credit monitoring services to those whose information was exposed in the data breach. They have been notified of this incident and are encouraged to remain vigilant by monitoring free credit reports for suspicious activity.
