Teenager sexually assaulted on Vancouver bus, charges filed: VPD

Vancouver police said charges have been filed against a suspect in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a Vancouver bus earlier this month.

Police said Metro Vancouver Transit Police launched an investigation after a 15-year-old girl reported being groped on a bus at the corner of Broadway and Quebec Street in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood shortly before 3 p.m. on May 17.

The VPD’s Sex Crimes Unit was called in to assist with the investigation, and a suspect was identified and then arrested Monday, police said.

“Reducing sexual crimes on public transit is one of our top operational priorities, and this is especially true when perpetrators target minors,” Const. Peter Kwok said in a statement Friday.

“Our General Investigation Unit has worked tirelessly with Vancouver Police investigators to identify a suspect and we hope that today sends a message to anyone who commits such a crime that they will be caught and held accountable.”

According to police, 25-year-old Brendan Jonathan Yates has been charged with sexual assault and sexual harassment in connection with the allegations.

Police added that Yates was later released on “several conditions.”
