General election: Labour accused of trying to purge the party’s left wing as Diane Abbott announces her candidacy – live

Diane Abbott has vowed to remain MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington “for as long as possible” despite the dispute over her political future.

Addressing a crowd outside Hackney Town Hall on Wednesday evening, the Labour veteran said: “You have always stood by me through good times and bad, and I will always stand by you.”

On Tuesday, Ms Abbott was given the confidence of the Labour Party again, but the question of whether she will be able to stand as the party’s candidate in the general election remains uncertain.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he sent a message of support to Ms Abbott as he spoke at a rally in north London, where he launched his own independent campaign for the Islington North seat after being banned from running for the Labour Party.

In another twist in the drama surrounding the Labour Party’s candidacy on Wednesday, MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle said he had been suspended from the party following a “harassing and politically motivated complaint” against him and could not stand in the election under the Labour flag.

The PA news agency understands that Mr Russell-Moyle has been suspended from the party pending the matter’s resolution following a serious complaint last week.

Labour claims Tory promises to increase mortgages by £350

Shadow Chief Secretary Darren Jones accused the Conservative government of being a “threat to family finances”.

In an extraordinary press conference, the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury said that measures such as conscription and the triple lock could lead to a rise in interest rates.

He said this was equivalent to the £71 billion in spending announced just a week into the election campaign.

Similar to Jeremy Hunt’s spending analysis of Labour’s election promises, Mr Jones claims the party produced a report based on Treasury documents.

The result is a series of unfunded policies that could increase monthly mortgage payments by £350 (25 percent), he claims.

Dispute over Diane Abbott: “Lack of transparency deeply disturbing,” says senior lawyer

Martin Forde KC said it was deeply worrying that senior shadow ministers such as Wes Streeting were unaware of the Diane Abbott situation.

He said Radio times: “I am getting WhatsApp messages, mostly from working black and Asian women, who are deeply upset about the way Ms Abbot has been treated.

“I’m really surprised at the timing, right in the run-up to the general election. While Labour hopes to form the next government, I think this was an opportunity for them to show they can be fair and impartial.”
