COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) — A first responder was hospitalized with serious injuries following a hit-and-run crash in Coventry Wednesday evening.

Western Coventry Fire Department Chief James Cady said crews were responding to a medical call on Victory Highway at around 9 p.m. at the time of the crash.

As the rescue workers got out of an emergency vehicle, a car crashed into the side of the truck, seriously injuring a crew member.

The first responder was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and another crew member was taken to Kent County Hospital for evaluation, Cady said.

Cady said Coventry police are investigating the incident.
