Spanish Fork teenager at home after tragic accident, boyfriend still in coma in hospital

SPANISH FORK, Utah (ABC4) — One of the two teenage girls hit by an SUV in Spanish Fork was released from the hospital earlier this week, but her friend remains in an induced coma at the hospital.

The tragic accident occurred on Saturday, May 18. According to witnesses two girls “ran into the street” and were hit by an oncoming Kia. Both 12-year-old Olivia and her 13-year-old friend Reagan were taken to Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

A family spokesperson confirmed to ABC4.com that Olivia was released from the hospital late last week. Meanwhile, according to a GoFundMe campaignRegan is still fighting for her life.

“Reagan remains in an artificial coma,” said an update on the fundraising page. “We are hoping for a miracle. Please keep these two young girls in your prayers.”

The residents of Spanish Fork have gathered and raised concerns above the intersection of 2300 East Canyon Road, where the girls were hit. Spanish Fork Mayor Mike Mendenhall said the city has been working with UDOT since fall 2022 to install a traffic light.

“After completing a traffic study last year, the traffic signal was scheduled to be built later this year and the project has already been put out to bid,” Mendenhall said in a statement. “We expect it to be completed in the next few months.”

Spanish Fork officials confirmed that the city is upfront about the cost of the project and UDOT will reimburse the city once the project is completed in August 2024.

In the meantime, Mendenhall said pedestrians should cross the street at a traffic light that has already been installed three blocks east of the 2300 East intersection. Drivers should pay attention to the road and watch for pedestrians crossing the street.

The city said it has also installed speed monitors at the intersection to slow traffic in the area. Detour signs have been put up to direct pedestrians to designated crosswalks, and the “northern section” of the intersection will be closed during construction.

Spanish Fork city officials said other safety measures are also being considered.
