Local teenager arrested for alleged robbery and assault on May 13

A local teenager was arrested early Sunday on felony warrants. He is accused of being one of four suspects who attacked and robbed a man outside a local Walmart store on May 13. He was reportedly in possession of a stolen gun when he was arrested.

Jared Lloyd Self, 18, of Maverick Place, was taken into custody around 2 a.m. on charges of firearm theft (up to six years in prison). Warrants were issued against him for aggravated robbery (up to life in prison), first-degree assault (up to 20 years), first-degree false imprisonment (up to 10 years) and theft of property (up to six years).

Self, who reported no prior criminal record, remained in custody on zero bail Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in Garland County District Court today.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the arrest warrants, on May 13, Hot Springs police responded to a robbery at Walmart at 4019 Central Avenue that had occurred shortly before.

The victim, a man, told officers he attempted to sell cell phones through Facebook to an account later determined to belong to Self. He had arranged to meet the buyer at the Walmart store entrance and noticed the buyer was traveling in a gray early 2000 model GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck.

The victim got into the truck and noticed that four men were sitting inside. The driver then drove through the parking lot. Immediately, one of the men sitting next to the victim started hitting him and tried to steal his backpack, which contained the cell phones, he said.

While he was struggling with the man, two other men in the back seat pulled out a pistol and a rifle and began hitting the victim in the back of the head. During the attack, the driver was still driving through the parking lot and reportedly had a pistol in his hand.

The victim attempted to open the door and get out, but was restrained by the other three suspects. Moments later, the victim was pushed out of the moving truck, sustaining further injuries.

The affidavit states the victim suffered injuries to her head, knees and arms that required stitches, “which is consistent with the story told.” The suspects allegedly stole three cell phones, two credit cards, identification and $50, all of which were found in the victim’s backpack.

While speaking with officers on scene, the victim reported that his credit cards were currently being used at Harps Food Store, 145 Thornton Ferry Road, however officers who were there were unable to locate the suspects at the time. It was noted that the cards were declined and the transaction did not go through.

Walmart surveillance video showed the truck in motion and the victim being ejected and “rolling on the ground.” It also noted that the vehicle failed to stop and fled the parking lot.

The victim provided the social media account and cell phone number used to sell the phones, which were allegedly traced back to Self. The victim stated that he could “clearly see” everyone in the truck and believed he could identify them.

The victim was shown a photo lineup that included a photo of Self and reportedly identified him as the man who had been sitting behind the driver with a black handgun. On May 23, warrants were issued for Self’s arrest.

According to the affidavit for Self’s arrest, just before 1 a.m. Sunday, HSPD Officer Alex Lee responded to a call about “suspicious persons” in the 100 block of Sunset.

Lee made contact with the caller and two white males, one of whom was identified as Self. The caller stated that when he encountered the two men, he noticed that both were carrying handguns “on their person.”

Lee took control of both weapons, a black SIG and a tan Taurus, unloaded them and locked them. He himself stated that the SIG was his and the Taurus was the other man’s.

A computer check of the SIG revealed that it had been reported stolen, and a check of Self revealed several warrants for his arrest, so he was taken into custody.
