Man rapes seven tribal girls in MP’s Sidhi posing as professor using voice-changing app

At least seven tribal girls were raped in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh by a 30-year-old man who posed as a college professor using a voice-changing app and offered them scholarships. Four cases have been filed against the accused so far and investigations are ongoing.

The accused has been identified as Brajesh Prajapati. It was also reported that the girls were raped between January and May this year.

“We have arrested the accused Brajesh Prajapati and two other men who helped him by giving him the phone number of the first victim,” Sidhi Superintendent of Police Ravindra Verma was quoted as saying by Indian Express. “The defendant used a voice-changing application available on the App Store to change his voice to that of a college professor in order to target these women,” he added.

According to reports, all the victims come from tribal communities and financially weak families.

According to police, four women have come forward so far and the accused has confessed to raping three more. “In one case, the accused raped a woman and her minor sister by luring them to a forest area. The POCSO Act has also been invoked against him,” Verma was quoted as saying.

The accused worked as a labourer and learned how to use the voice-changing application from YouTube. With the help of co-accused Rahul Prajapati and Sandeep Prajapati, he obtained the phone number of the first victim, police said.

According to police, the accused called the girl to a remote place under the pretext of giving her a scholarship. He posed as a college professor and told the girl that her son would pick her up and accompany her to her house where the scholarship would be paid.

After the girl fell into the trap, the accused took the victim to a remote place in a forest area where he raped her in an abandoned house (Subscribe to) his family.

Sidhi SP further reported that the man also threatened the girls with severe consequences if they reported him. He also stole the girls’ mobile phones to search for contacts of other women on their phones. “He called random numbers and spoke to women 10 to 20 times a day. He offered scholarships and if they did not go to college, he offered government schemes to lure them to the forest,” the official said.
