Man attacked GP staff over lack of appointment

A man who attempted to strangle a GP surgery worker and attacked three others with a pole after failing to get an appointment that day has been jailed.

Olumuiwa Oduntan, 61, smashed the reception’s protective screen before climbing onto the desk at the practice in Ashton Old Road, Manchester, in 2021.

He hit four workers, including a doctor, on the head and tried to strangle a woman, Greater Manchester police said.

Oduntan was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

“Unprovoked violence”

He had called earlier in the day to make an appointment and became “aggressive and threatening” when he heard that no one was available, police said.

A few hours later he visited the practice and became violent towards the reception staff.

Oduntan smashed the barrier with a bollard before climbing over, hitting three receptionists and a doctor and attempting to strangle one of the women.

At a trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to four counts of affray and grievous bodily harm.

He was also granted a restraining order.

Det Con Philippa Barker said: “We are pleased with today’s outcome and hope it will provide some peace to the victims who suffered serious injuries as a result of unprovoked violence and enable them to heal from this horrific experience.”
