Student arrested at Laurel Co. school after firearm discovered

LAUREL CO., Ky. (WYMT) – A student has been charged after staff at East Bernstadt Elementary School found a gun in her backpack.

On Tuesday morning, the student attempted to enter the school through a metal detector when staff found a replica of an inoperable firearm.

The student was arrested by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer assigned to the school.

According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary results indicate that no students were ever at risk.

The sheriff’s office is continuing the investigation.
