Florida man recovering after shark attack in the Bahamas

Marlin Wakeman, a 24-year-old from Stuart, Florida, is on the road to recovery after a horrific shark attack at a marina in the Bahamas.

The incident occurred last month when Wakeman lost his footing while attempting to jump onto a docked boat at the Flying Fish Marina on Long Island and fell into shark-infested waters.

A few moments after the fall, he suffered a bite to his leg, presumably by a Caribbean reef shark. Almost immediately, another shark hit him in the shoulder, adding to the danger of his situation.

Taking action saves a life

The boat captain’s quick thinking, who immediately applied a tourniquet to Wakeman’s leg, played a crucial role in preventing further blood loss.

Wakeman was then taken to a local clinic before being flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, for surgery.

Medical findings and prognosis

Dr. Robert Borrego, the trauma surgeon who treated Wakeman, determined that the shark bite pierced the kneecap and narrowly missed a major artery.

The surgeon estimated the shark’s length to be about 7 feet based on the size of the bite mark.

Despite the severity of the injuries, medics are optimistic about Wakeman’s recovery and expect a return to full health.
