Russia claims one dead and 29 injured in a Ukrainian attack on Belgorod Oblast

A large-scale Ukrainian attack hit Belgorod and the surrounding region on the evening of May 11, causing damage and casualties, claimed the region’s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

Ukraine typically does not comment on reported attacks against it Belgorod. The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify Russian officials’ claims.

Gladkov reported a missile attack alert in the oblast at around 8:15 p.m. local time. Shortly afterwards, Russian Telegram channels published footage of burning cars and smoke rising over Belgorod.

According to Gladkov, one woman was killed in the attack, 29 people, including a child, were injured and hospitalized.

Several homes, commercial establishments, cars, and medical and educational facilities were reportedly damaged.

Damage was also reported in the nearby village of Dubovoye, Gladkov said on his Telegram channel.

The governor did not specify whether the damage and casualties were due to direct hits or falling fragments of fired projectiles.

Belgorod Oblast borders the Ukrainian oblasts of Sumy, Kharkiv and Luhansk. Claims about missile or drone Attacks against in the region have become an everyday occurrence in recent months.

Russia reportedly often uses Belgorod Oblast as a launching pad for cross-border missile attacks against Ukraine.

Belgorod Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said drones hit vehicles transporting workers to a factory near the village of Berezovka and that six people died on the spot.
