The New Jersey Attorney General is investigating the fatal shooting of a woman by Fort Lee police. Here’s what we know.

FORT LEE, NJ – An investigation is underway in New Jersey after a police officer shot and killed a woman early Sunday morning.

The investigation has been turned over to the state, which is standard procedure in any police-involved shooting. The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is now investigating after Fort Lee police officers were called to a building. The 911 caller, the woman’s brother, told the dispatcher she was having a mental seizure and had a knife with her.

This is what happened according to investigators

Video footage shows investigators on scene at the Pinnacle Apartments on Main Street.

The shooting occurred at about 1:25 a.m. The Attorney General’s Office released details on Sunday evening, saying that a 911 caller reported that his sister was having a mental health crisis, needed to go to the hospital, and had a knife with her.

The caller was standing in front of the apartment door when an officer arrived. The officer opened the door, but two women told him not to come in and closed the door.

After repeated requests to open, more officers broke down the door.

As the woman approached, a police officer shot her once in the chest, killing her, officials said.

The Attorney General’s Office said investigators recovered a knife at the scene, but did not know if she was holding the knife when officers shot her.

A neighbor said he needed to know more.

“So they already knew the person had a knife. So why use deadly force? Why not use a different tactic?” the neighbor said. “Because I have family members who also have mental health issues and I’m calling the police. I trust them. I’m not calling them to cause more harm.”
