There are so many things to do during the summer in Buffalo at Canalside and many activities are free.

BUFFALO, NY — The Buffalo Waterfront offers a variety of activities to encourage the community to stay active during the summer.

“There’s so much to do on a daily basis at Canalside,” said Lauren Ford, general manager of Buffalo Waterfront. “You can visit the vendors on the boardwalk, and then we also have full programming and events throughout the summer.”

With a variety of free fitness classes Tuesday through Saturday, the Waterfront offers a packed schedule of activities and events. The Waterfront offers classes ranging from hula hoop to Zumba to boot camp.

Zumba classes are very popular, with Ford noting that up to 100 people participate each week.

“If you’re not a good dancer, you can definitely get lost in the crowd,” she said.

“They bring energy… It’s a party every Tuesday.”

The Waterfront also hosts “EPIC Storytime” every Wednesday on the lawn to encourage children to read during the summer. Additionally, every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Explore & More – The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Children’s Museum hosts a free Play Friday for kids ages 10 and under. Ford encourages visitors to visit the museum afterward.

The Buffalo Heritage Carousel is located on the waterfront with a la carte fares starting at $1.

The Waterfront is home to the Seneca Chief, a complete, traditional replica of an 1800s-style Erie Canal ship. Visitors can learn about the history of the boat and the canal.

Visitors can venture out on three different cruises such as family cruises, sunset cruises and wine cruises that cater to different demographics in the city of Buffalo.

You’ll also find a variety of local food and drink offerings at Canalside.

“We are really excited to partner with local brands to grow our food and beverage business this year,” she added.

New options include Resurgence and Nick Charlap’s Ice Cream.

To stay up to date on all things waterfront, Ford encourages those interested to follow the Buffalo Waterfront on social media or visit their website.
