By AFP July 27, 2024 | 7:26 p.m. PT

Early Saturday morning, a vehicle drove into pedestrians in a large city in central China. Eight people were killed and five injured, authorities said. However, it was not specified whether the act was deliberate.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, police said.

“A motor vehicle hit pedestrians,” it said. Eight people died in the tragedy and five others were injured, at least some of whom were hospitalized.

A 55-year-old suspect living in the area has been arrested and investigations are ongoing, the statement said.

Due to the lack of strict safety controls, traffic accidents are common in China.

There were also attacks with vehicles, but the police did not provide any information as to whether these were intentional acts.
