Enzo Fernandez speaks publicly for the first time since the racism incident

Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez has spoken publicly for the first time since the racist incident on the Argentine team bus after the Copa America final.

Fernandez caused controversy in the aftermath of Argentina’s Copa America success when he went live on Instagram and chanted a racist and homophobic song about French players along with his teammates.

The video went viral for all the wrong reasons and Chelsea’s French squad of players unfollowed the midfielder on social media, while Wesley Fofana posted a clip of the video on social media with the words “Football in 2024: unbridled racism.”

The world champion subsequently apologized both publicly and privately and Reece James announced that he had spoken to Fernandez.

Chelsea have launched internal disciplinary proceedings over the incident, while UEFA and FIFA are also investigating the video.

Fernandez will take part in Chelsea’s pre-season tour on Monday, which could be a difficult reintegration into the team for him.

The 23-year-old spoke briefly to a reporter from his car and said he had apologised and would return to Chelsea.
