Houstonians Can Save Money With These Grocery Shopping Hacks

Houston, Texas – Looking to save money on the items you buy every week? If so, Bill Spencer is here for you!

If you’re wandering the aisles aimlessly looking for your favorite snacks and wondering, “Is a giant jar of pickles a better deal than a small one?” you might want to consider these tips:

Unit price

Unit pricing may not be a new money-saving tool, but it’s one that many consumers tend to overlook.

“I actually do the math at the store because it saves me a lot of money,” said shopper Margot Gilman.

So, for those who don’t know, what is unit pricing? It’s the little numbers on grocery store shelf labels that indicate how much a product costs per pound, per quart, or some other standard unit of measurement.

These prices help you find the best deal, at least in theory, by allowing you to compare apples to apples no matter what you’re buying. By looking at two different sized jam jars, for example, you should be able to see which one is cheaper per gram.

Search for store offers

Liz Colvin, Kroger’s merchandise guru, said the biggest in-store promotions are typically displayed in plain sight, at the end of an aisle or the front of an aisle.

“We definitely highlight items that are of value to the customer. So if you’re talking about the meat department, it’s in the refrigerated bunker at the front of the department when you walk in, so it’s very easy to see those types of items,” Colvin said.

Use a grocery rewards card

Some credit cards can offer you rewards for your grocery purchases. The Citi Double Cash® Card can earn you 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% when you pay for those purchases. Plus, the American Express credit card offers 6% cash back on grocery store statements, or $6,000 per year.

Sign up for the loyalty program

Most stores have a loyalty program, email list, or app you can download that offers several deals and sometimes free items.
