Analyzing the Sabres’ Recent Home Opener History

This season, the Buffalo Sabres will face the Los Angeles Kings at home for the first time on October 10th. They hope to start the season off strong in front of their fans and try to break through and qualify for the playoffs. Here’s a look back at their last 5 home openers.

October 5, 2019:The Sabres won 7-2 over the New Jersey Devils. Victor Olofsson and Sam Reinhart both scored two goals to start Buffalo’s 50th anniversary season. Note that the season was shortened due to the Covid pandemic.

January 14, 2021:The Sabres lost to the Capitals 6-4 to start the COVID-shortened season. Jack Eichel contributed two assists in the loss and the team had 20 hits in the game.

October 14, 2021: Buffalo won its home opener against the Montreal Canadiens, winning 5-1. Veteran goaltender Craig Anderson made 30 saves and Kyle Okposo opened the scoring on a short-handed goal in the first period.

October 13, 2022:The Sabres won 4-1 against the Ottawa Senators. Craig Anderson posted a .972 save percentage and Victor Olofsson assisted on two goals. The Sabres trailed 1-0 after the first period, but scored four unanswered goals starting in the second.

October 12, 2023:Buffalo lost to the New York Rangers 5-1 in last season’s home opener. The lone bright spot came from an even-strength goal in the second period by JJ Peterka. It marked the start of a career-high 28 goals for Peterka on the season.

Emotions will be running high against the Los Angeles Kings. The Sabres are not only welcoming back Lindy Ruff, but they are also looking to end their playoff drought. Getting off to a flying start and winning the home opener will be the first step in that direction.
