Barnstable School Administrator Arrested During Student Health Crisis

During a typical shift from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Gerald Lopes, former Barnstable High School building manager, cleaned up spills; removes trash from the dining room; and delivered paper towels, bottled water and printing paper to classrooms.

But around 10:32 a.m. Friday, March 22, Lopes struggled to stand after he said he was tackled and handcuffed by Barnstable Police Officer Matthew Melia.

“I was arrested because of my job,” said Lopes, who was a custodian at the school for about 18 years.

According to a report from Barnstable police, the school was placed on lockdown after a student experiencing a mental health crisis climbed onto the roof of the school. When Lopes showed up behind the school after the students’ lunch break to throw trash into a dumpster, Lopes allegedly ignored Melia’s warnings to evacuate the area. According to police documents, Lopes told Melia, “You, I have a job to do.”
