Raymond Shorten sentenced to 13 years in prison for raping 7-year-old girl

Taxi driver Raymond Shorten, who was convicted last month of raping two young women in his taxi on two separate nights in 2022, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for raping a seven-year-old girl 12 years ago.

Judge Kerida Naidoo said the fact that Shorten raped a seven or eight-year-old girl on the day of her mother’s funeral showed that he had a total lack of compassion and was completely indifferent to the pain, abuse and long-term consequences for the girl.

Shorten, 50, of Melrose Crescent in Clondalkin, Dublin, was 38 years old when he raped the child twice and was also convicted of sexual abuse.

The young woman waived her right to anonymity so that Shorten could be named.
