Communal clashes: Pregnant woman raped in gangsters attack on community in Nasarawa

A predominantly Tiv community in the Keana local government area is said to have attacked the Alago settlement, leaving numerous people injured.

The attack occurred on the Keana-Obosidoma road, about two kilometers from Keana town, according to Amos Baba, a chief and resident of Keana.

Baba told journalists that Shuaibu Epu, a man from Alago, was allegedly stabbed to death by some rowdy youths while he was working on his farm, saying that Epu was currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

He explained that during the attack, a pregnant Koro woman was raped by the attackers and is currently receiving treatment at the Dalhatu Arafat Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia.

Baba praised the rapid military intervention, which prevented a further escalation of the crisis.

Reacting to the incident, Mr Phillip Nongu, President of the Nasarawa State chapter of the Mzough U Tiv (MUT), claimed that some Tiv youths who had attempted to reconcile with the Alago youths over the attack were killed in a subsequent reprisal.

The two Tiv youths, John Iwar and Verior Vitalis Utime, were reportedly killed in the reprisal.

Nongu blamed the military for the deaths because it failed to control the angry youths of Alago.

He called on both parties to lay down their arms, saying violence hinders development, and urged them to live in peace.
