What you need to know about lightning after the scary Hudson Valley incident

This is an incredibly dangerous situation for many reasons. Did you know that a single bolt of lightning can be about five times hotter than the surface of the sun? The average bolt of lightning also has a voltage of 300 million volts, enough to power a small town for an entire day!


Here are some tips for your safety when lightning strikes are imminent:

  • If it thunders, go into the house as quickly as possible.
  • If you don’t feel safe indoors, be sure to avoid metal and wires and stay near trees.
  • Lightning can strike up to 10 miles outside the area of ​​a thunderstorm, so always stay indoors when a thunderstorm is nearby, even if it hasn’t reached your location yet.
  • If someone is struck by lightning, you must of course immediately
